Do great artist need to study composition? Or is it inherently within them? When I've looked at cave paintings ( online ) they appear to be ( some at least ) composed. It puzzles me that before the rules, even perhaps before language some people " have it ". The theory being that enabling the subconscious might have been the key. Was the primitive mind able to do that more easily?
Jill, your productions are truly masterful. They always leave me wanting more and they have my complete attention. I would love to see you do more on Degas .
Amazing

big fan of your work and i love the way you present things...
Thank you so much
Bouguereau- The absolute master of skin tone, the eyes and human form. Seeing his works in person, {for me} no other painter has been able to paint such 'life' into the subjects eyes like he did.
Here, here....overall he was simply unbelievable.
thank you great video. Sargent used poppy seed oil too. There was also clove oil in the paint was well. Most likely he used damar in the initial layers or a siccative for faster drying . You know your stuff what's your background?
Thank you for that additional information and compliment. My degree is actually in Public Relations, but I grew up around art and am myself an artist. I think working in both oil and watercolor gives me a balanced personal experience. Additionally, I love what I do, I love art history, and I love to research.
Thank you for updating❤
the video has some interesting points, but the Italian word pronunciations need quite a bit of work. Decent try though :)
Yes, my apologies. My foreign accents aren't the best, but I do try!
@@JillPoyerdFineArt No problem and I understand.
The opening picture on the thumbnail is a picture I have longed to have or a copy of it. I can never find the correct name for . Is it called " la fumiere"????Can you supply that for me p,ease. I really enjoyed the video. Thank you
Sure! It is stunning, isn't it? The title is Fumée d'ambre gris (Smoke of Ambergris). Here's a link to the image: www.clarkart.edu/ArtPiece/Detail/Fumee-d-ambre-gris-(Smoke-of-Ambergris)-(1)
Awww. I wasn't ready for it to be over. That was lovely!!
That's so kind - I'm so glad
What a wonderful segment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on the subject matter. From my subjective perspective, no one has ever come close to the magnitude of mastery of Jan van Eyck. In my view, he is the ultimate God in the fine arts realm of painting. Conversely, there are many Titian-esque artists.
He's one of my favorites as well...incredible mastery of the medium.
Greatly enjoyed your series on brushstrokes. As a point of shared interest; there is a segment in an Andrew Dixon Graham video where he looks at a portrait painted by Rembrandt this is still hanging in its original location in a private house in Amsterdam and where its present owner discloses unscripted that Rembrandt had used his thumb to paint the series of buttons on the subject's jacket. A close up reveals Rembrandt's thumb print in the buttons.
Oh wow...I'd love to see this. Can you send a link or tell me the painting's title?
BBC series called High Art of the Low Countries with Andrew Dixon Graham
I am a male artist and appreciate you expose and laud female artists. There were so many that we never hear about. I am going to raise the ire of my male counterparts, but women are superior to men in so many things. This is why they were repressed publicly. Chauvinism has been a terrible barrier for women. I love watching your videos. Keep them coming.
That is such a meaningful comment. I appreciate your openness here. Thank goodness we've made great strides as a society, but I do think it's important to give exposure to those who were overlooked.
I've done all forms of painting including watercolour, gouache, acrylic and oil and whilst oils for e.g. is more technical (i.e. you need more stuff to make it work well), watercolour for me has by far been the hardest to develop layering skill and brush control due to the transparency of it. That said, some of the best classical artworks throughout history have been done in watercolour!
Well said....great commentary.
Always a joy to listen and look at your video's. I believe that art / culture can save what is left of society and that humans promoting it, will need to have their names mentioned at one point. Thank you
I really appreciated for your video. I can’t take off my eyes from it. Learnt a lot from it. Was beautiful moment.
How wonderful...I'm so glad you enjoyed it
What is amazing we are still trying to achieve these results today. I have been doing master copy painting myself and I see this is how we artists today are still trying into paint “loosely” using ” bravura” brush work.. These geniuses were so far ahead of many painting today. It took us centuries to try and reinvent the wheel. They people, men and women,en, were and still are the greatest artists of all time
One more quality video - educational, enjoyable and relaxing with your hypnotic voice! Thanks always.
So glad it met the mark!
Dandy talk... I want some of that Rubens' skill and obvious joy he invoked through his sketches/drawings.
It reminds me of a painting I'm copying of a autumn/winter scene where the shadows under distant trees are actually a lavender color.
I'm looking forward to visiting the Freer Museum to see their collection.
Oh yes...it's a beautiful collection. You'll love it.
I like watercolor more --just like what the video says, it's very accessible. Imagine carrying a canvas on a trip?! :) I just think that art world should give more exposure to watercolor artist.
I agree. Many art schools don't even teach watercolor - unless they've started to in more recent times. Hopefully, that will change. I think it will.
And art is subjective. I for one are more gravitated towards a more monochromatic art, "Less is More". Hence, i don't understand abstract :)
It really is so subjective. (I, too, find myself drawn to monochromatic work...)
This 3 part series is what I wish my formal art education had included. Art history doesn't have to be boring. I learned more, understood more, and loved art more here than many years of academic schooling.
This is SUCH a meaningful comment to me. It's part of why I created this Channel to begin with many years ago. Thank you for letting me know...
You drop, I click! Brilliant channel!
Nice!
Agree saw one at the Met he fantastic
Excelente Video!!! Como siempre!!! Y Muchisimas Gracias!!!!
Missed You. I think he was just having a bit of fun.
Very informative videos...enjoyable and relaxing to watch. What galleries in Northern Virginia showcase your art?
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'm afraid my online content work has taken up so much of my time that I don't have the painting output needed to work with brick and mortar galleries right now. I do have a few paintings on UGallery.com and I do participate in occasional regional shows. You're welcome to submit your email via my website to receive my quarterly newsletter. I love your videos Jill! Sending you a hug from South America ❤
Thank you so much! So sweet
I prefer looking at artists' sketches and unfinished pieces.
You really do see something more personal in artist sketches...
In his 'sketches' you can see his craftsmanship, which was also seen as Rembrandt's better in his time.
Really love this masterstudy video, please bring more.
I'm so glad. I'm a little slow in getting them out, but there are plans for many more...
Thanks!
Incredible
Thanks!
So kind!
Thanks!
Thank you so much! That's so kind
Thanks so much for this......I recently purchased a book focusing solely on Rubens` oil sketches, so this is a lovely post!
You know, I think I saw that book online....looks great! I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you for posting yet another great insight … live long and healthy

When I got the notification that you uploaded a video I clicked in 2 seconds 😂 So haven’t watched it yet but always great when you upload a new video!
Oh that's so kind! I'm flattered!
Me too!
what a beautiful grain round texture. What canvas is this? I love your voice, and your Udemy courses. Very very complete info. Thanks
Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoy my work! Can you tell me where in the video the canvas texture is that you're referring to? I want to make sure I answer you correctly.
@@JillPoyerdFineArt 6:33. Thanks, here where I live there aren’t canvas like these anymore like phoenix canvas, only royal talens are promoted
@ Oh, I'm sorry you're so limited where you live. It's been a while but I believe if I paint on stretched canvas it's normally Masterpiece Brand. Here is their website: masterpiecearts.com I can't remember which line it was but likely Vincent.
I think Turner's painting of the moon obscuring dark clouds in Fishermen at Sea deserved a mention.
Oh goodness yes! I missed that one. I'm surprised to see that he did that (painted the moon right over the clouds). Here's a link if anyone else is curious: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishermen_at_Sea#/media/File:Joseph_Mallord_William_Turner_-_Fishermen_at_Sea_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg

This is an amazing video! Awesome work :D
Thank you!
What an interesting video. And I can tell you that the major obstacle to my development as an artist is lack of patience. It t is a good thing it is just a hobby for me.
Oh, you're not alone. I think most people today suffer from that, but we can work on it perhaps. I know I'm trying to.
thank you I am going to show this to my adolescent students.
Oh how nice! I love to know my work can reach young people in that way. I would love to help the next generation better understand and appreciate fine art from throughout history. There's so much enjoyment from it.
That covered a few details to practice to better appreciate :-)
